An imaginary still-life inspired by the myth of Persephone, the virginal goddess whose descent into the underworld transformed her into a wise and powerful queen. Rabbits are an enduring symbol of fertility and rebirth, and the pomegranate is the sacred fruit which sealed Persephone's fate. In eating seeds offered to her by Hades, she became bound to him in marriage and was then forced to live out half of every year in the underworld, giving us the season of winter.
